Suan Phlu 9 Office: Maximizing Space Efficiency with Steel Structures

Driven by the need to expand both office and residential spaces from an existing building in the same neighborhood, which had become increasingly crowded and insufficient to accommodate a growing number of occupants, the owner of Suan Phlu 9 Office envisioned a new building that could fully support these expanding needs while reflecting a modern and distinctive business identity.

Designed by Pae Jeravej Hongsakul of IDIN Architects, Suan Phlu 9 Office is a mixed-use residential and office building that maximizes the use of a compact plot of land. The building occupies nearly the entire available site and rises to eight stories, allowing the usable space to be optimized efficiently. Its modern and distinctive façade stands out among the surrounding residential buildings while maintaining a modest architectural presence that blends harmoniously with the local community.

Suan Phlu 9 Office: A Modern Steel Structure Building Designed with Consideration for Its Surroundings

Situated within a residential community and adjacent to the Lao Pun Tao Kong Shrine, the building’s height could potentially affect the surrounding environment, particularly in terms of views and reflected sunlight. To address these concerns, Pae Jeravej Hongsakul incorporated recessed spaces into the building to create vertical gardens resembling large tree pots. These green spaces provide shade and a refreshing natural atmosphere, while perforated aluminum panels are integrated into the façade to create a lighter, more open appearance. The panels also help filter sunlight from the west and improve ventilation. This design allows both local residents and building occupants to enjoy views of the vertical gardens, while making the green spaces accessible and beneficial to both groups.

Efficient Construction in Limited Spaces with H-Beam Steel Structures

From the beginning, the building owner intended to use H-Beam steel as the primary structural system. Given the site’s limited size, its location within a densely populated community, and the relatively narrow access road, H-Beam steel structures proved to be a suitable construction solution. The selection of SM520-grade steel further enhanced the structure’s strength and load-bearing capacity, while allowing for a simpler and faster construction process. This approach also helped minimize dust and noise disturbances during construction, reducing the impact on the surrounding community. In addition, the H-Beam steel structure made it easier to manage structural joints and connections with the building’s façade, simplifying installation, assembly, and finishing work.

A Well-Organized Integration of Residential and Office Spaces Without Separation

One of the key advantages of SM520-grade H-Beam steel is its ability to provide high structural strength and load-bearing capacity with smaller steel sections. This helps reduce the bulkiness of structural elements, creating a more open and spacious interior while increasing the usable space within Suan Phlu 9 Office. As a result, the interior spaces can be organized and allocated more efficiently to accommodate both residential and office functions.

Furthermore, H-Beam steel structures offer design flexibility and can be seamlessly integrated with various architectural and interior styles. This allows Suan Phlu 9 Office to express a distinctive, modern, and clearly defined architectural identity on the exterior while creating a soft, warm, comfortable, and welcoming atmosphere inside the building.

Although steel structures may involve higher initial construction costs, their long-term value becomes evident when considering several advantages, including faster construction, easier construction management, reduced impact on the surrounding community, long-term environmental benefits, and the enduring value of steel as a material. These qualities make H-Beam steel a worthwhile and suitable choice for structural applications.
