FAQ
Question
: What are the uses of cut beams?
Answer
: Cut beams are H-beams that are cut in the middle at the web, resulting in two symmetrical cut beams. They are used in the construction of roof truss, which helps eliminate the need for designers and contractors to weld two angles together or secure it to gusset plate, using nuts.
Question
: How can we prevent structural steel building from rusting?
Answer
: Rusting takes place in the presence of oxygen and moisture. The application of protective coating can prevent moisture and oxygen from permeating into the surface of the structural steel, inhibiting the corrosion process. Before applying protective coating, it is advisable to clean the steel surface using a wire brush or sandblasting. Then paint finish the surface.
Question
: Is structural steel available in other lengths apart from 6m?
Answer
: SYS structural steel products are available at 6, 9, and 12 m. Other lengths to eliminate the need to join steel or leave scraps are available upon request through the dealers. SYS offers the cut to length service to address customers’ specific application needs.
Question
: What are the differences between grade SS400 and SM400?
Answer
: Grade SS400 is suitable for nut & bolt application while grade SM400 is ideal for welding. However, both grades have the same impact resistance capability.
Question
: What is the TIS grade equivalent of grade ASTM A36?
Answer
: Grade A36 is equivalent to grade SS400 or SM400 in accordance with the TIS.
Question
: Why aren’t wide-flange shapes available in grade TIS?
Answer
: Wide-flange shapes or W-shapes are Americanstandard shapes in conformance with ASTM. In Thailand, they are called H-beams in accordance with TIS 1227-2539 standard
Question
: What are the differences between H-beams and I-beams?
Answer
: 1.Application – H-beams are used for the construction of columns, beams, roof structures, etc while
I-beams are used to make crane girders for lifting and transporting heavy loads.
2. Shape – H-beams have upper and lower flanges in which the planes are nearly parallel whereas
I-beams have taper flanges. With the same cross section size, I-beams have higher weight per
meter than H-beams as I-beams feature a greater thickness to absorb impact and accommodate
the movement on crane girders.
Question
: How is hot-rolled structural steel produced?
Answer
: To make hot-rolled structural steel, steel scraps from different sources such as building wreckages are melted in a large electric furnace. With the addition of additives to the mixture, the molten steel is cast into blooms or beam blanks. They are then hot-rolled into the required size and shape of rolled steel section. Structural steel is considered a green product since nearly 100% of structural steel frames can be recycled.
